"We are thrilled to participate in such a worthwhile event that helps so many people," said Greenwood Development's John Betts of the tournament that will raise funds for 17 local charities in Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort.
“In the past 25 years we literally have helped thousands of children. It all goes back to the kids.”
In 2005, $200,000 was distributed to 17 children's charities in Beaufort County and to victims of Hurricane Katrina in Long Beach, Miss. To date, the Hilton Head Island Celebrity Golf Tournament has distributed $2,560,000 to charity.
Among the celebrities slated to participate in 2006 are golf journalist and broadcaster Ben Wright, Olympic Gold Medalist Shannon Miller, and "Late Show with David Letterman" announcer Alan Kalter. For a complete list of celebrities, visit http://www.hhcelebritygolf.com/.
Amateur foursomes will be paired with a celebrity each day and play will start with a 9 a.m. shotgun. Gallery admission is free.
Last year, the Celebrity Golf Tournament celebrated a special anniversary when it turned 25 years old. Tournament director Gayle Wingo said she attributes the tournament's longevity to the fact that it's a festive, entertaining weekend, star-studded with about 40 celebrities from sports, film, television, music and comedy. Past celebrity participants have included the likes of Neil Armstrong and Michael Jordan.
The weekend also draws a crowd because it includes children's activities, shows, drawings, auctions and celebrity meet-and-greets in addition to golfing, Wingo said.
But most of all, she said, the tournament has remained popular because it's a good cause.
"I think we're still here because we are doing this for the right reasons," Wingo said. "In the past 25 years we literally have helped thousands of children. It all goes back to the kids."
