According to Destin's Division Chief Rodney Syfrett, the department recently installed MobileEyes(TM) fire inspection software, provided by TradeMaster, Inc. The software runs on a tablet PC and includes handwriting recognition capabilities that make note-taking as easy as writing on a yellow pad.
"We can now record all our comments in one place," said Syfrett. "The software also helps us collect more information than we could before."
The Destin fire department has three inspectors who are required to make twice-yearly visits to approximately 1,800 facilities, not including new constructions. Many of the new buildings in this rapidly growing community are high-rise condominiums with six to 20 floors.
"MobileEyes is working well for both new construction and regular inspections," added Syfrett. It is estimated that Destin will complete 40 percent more inspections per inspector per month with MobileEyes. The program also makes it easier to track violations and schedule re-inspections when needed.
MobileEyes was designed to automate time-consuming manual tasks such as looking up fire codes, writing reports, and keying or re-keying inspection reports into a data base.
TradeMaster Vice President Tom Gorman said, "Our goal in developing MobileEyes was to help fire inspectors focus on what they do best--prevent fires and save lives by identifying and correcting unsafe building conditions."
