In 1983, Fitzpatrick started a newsletter called ShopTalk. It contains daily reports about the news and programming business. ShopTalk, which has over 100,000 readers daily, is now part of the larger TVSpy website (www.tvspy.com). TVSpy, a Vault Inc. enterprise, includes recruitment services for employers, employee surveys from hundreds of the industry's biggest companies, and the famous TVSpy Watercooler, where TV news professionals can connect with each other and post about the latest happenings in the business. Fitzpatrick continues to compile ShopTalk and oversees the TVSpy website.
From 1982 to 2000, Fitzpatrick owned and operated Don Fitzpatrick Associates in San Francisco, at the time the largest on-air talent and news management recruitment firm in the country. His clients included CBS News, CBS Sports, ABC News, NBC News, CNN and ESPN, among others. Talent "found" on the Don Fitzpatrick watch includes Jim Nantz, Meredith Vieira, Leeza Gibbons and John Tesh.
