This contract gives Biozym the sales rights in Germany and Austria for the SpeedCycler, developed by Analytik Jena in cooperation with the Jena-based Hans Knoll Institute and licensed by the Applera Corporation. The main features of the SpeedCycler technology, include ultra-fast and efficient duplication of the sample material.
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) refers to a standard method, established since the early 1990s, in which many copies are made from specific segments of DNA. This technique can be used to verify infective agents (e.g. bacteria and viruses), to identify hereditary diseases and to verify paternity or guilt ("genetic fingerprint").
According to experts, the highly dynamic market for technologies such as DNA chips, proteome analysis and bioinformatics is to be over the EUR 10 billion mark for the next five years, with annual market growth of around 15% to 25%.
With the SpeedCycler, unveiled last year and now going into series production, Analytik Jena is setting of a greater efficiency compared with the most of thermocyclers currently available on the market. A typical protocol enables a PCR of 30 cycles in less than 13 minutes. This is 10 times faster than conventional systems.
At the contract signing, Klaus Berka, Chairman of the Executive Board of Analytik Jena, explained that the long-standing technology sales success of Biozym in this market segment was the main factor, and that the synergies with Biozym's own product range formed an outstanding basis for a promising cooperation for both contracting parties.
