Mr. Vela brings 20 years of business and public service experience as a national Latino leader to the newly created position. Most recently, he was the Executive Director of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) in San Diego. Prior to NAHREP, Mr. Vela established a private consulting practice, Diverse Directions LLC, advising clients on marketing strategies, government issues and media relations, targeting the Hispanic community. His career also includes experience as COO of Soloella.com, the first Latina-centric Web site, and a distinguished career in public service, including serving as Senior Advisor on Hispanic Affairs and Chief Financial Officer for Vice President Al Gore.

Mr. Vela received his BA degree from the University of Texas and his JD from St Mary's University School of Law, and is a member of the State Bar of Texas.
