Advanstar Communications Announces Successful Launch of SensorsGOV Expo & Conference

SensorsGov 2004
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.--()--Sept. 23, 2004--

Sensors Science and Technology is Highlighted as Critical Component of Government & Military Initiatives

“In fact, given that sensors are such an important technology sector, we are launching a new association called the National Association of Sensor Science and Technology to facilitate greater business growth and collaboration opportunities”

The first annual SensorsGOV Expo & Conference, the premiere sensor technology event filling the specific educational, development and resource needs of U.S. Government and Military organizations, was deemed a resounding success by exhibiting companies, speakers, conferees and executives who attended. The event was held from September 13-September 15 at the DoubleTree Hotel, Virginia Beach, VA.

SensorsGOV offered a stellar lineup of keynote speakers, including Dr. Vitalij Garber, Director of Systems and Mission Integration, Defense Systems, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense; Admiral James Loy, Deputy Secretary, Department of Homeland Security; and, Dr. Douglas L. Dwoyer, Associate Director for Research & Technology Competencies, NASA Langley Research Center.

Dr. "V" highlighted the importance of interoperability in transforming data to real time decision support in the military's modern "joint" environment. Admiral Loy acknowledged the importance of SensorsGOV and events that bring together private industry with academia and government and military agencies, to foster collaboration and innovation in the fight against the first "ism" of the twenty first century. Dr. Dwoyer reflected on the substantial sensor technologies necessary to support NASA's future space missions.

In addition to speakers from the federal agencies that invest most heavily in sensors technology, SensorsGOV featured the latest products and services from world-class organizations serving sensor research, manufacturing and system integration applications. The exhibit floor offered the latest in sensor materials; MEMS; piezoelectrics; optical; nanotechnology; fiber-optics; acoustics; ultrasonics' microelectronics; ASICs; embedded systems; networking products; wireless devices; instrumentation and controls; software, data acquisition and information networks.

"Advanstar has done it again. Partnering with NASST, (National Association of Sensor Science & Technology) they have taken the success of Sensors EXPO in the commercial space and brought it to the government space with SensorsGOV. The conference sessions and networking opportunities allowed us to capture information and meet individuals that will help move our business forward. We will be exhibiting next year," said David Tietjen, VP Sales & Marketing, Merit Sensor Systems, Inc.

Sponsors of the event were Oceana Sensor Technology, NASA, and Measurement Specialties; and supporting sponsors included Peninsula Alliance, AeA, Sensor Science & Technology Forum, CIT, Old Dominion University, and TeCC. The official publication was Sensors magazine. Media sponsors included e-Drive, Homeland Defense Journal, Magnetics Business & Technology, Photonic Spectra, and Remote Site & Equipment Management.

Attendees to SensorsGOV had the opportunity to communicate challenges and solutions across government and military agencies and with vendors with whom they could share their collaborative objectives. "We are not surprised that SensorsGOV was well attended given the fact that the government spends billions of dollars on research and development and acquisition of sensor technology," said Rick Lally, President of Oceana Sensor Technologies Inc. of Virginia Beach and Conference Chairperson from Hampton Roads' Sensor Science & Technology Forum (SS&TF). "In fact, given that sensors are such an important technology sector, we are launching a new association called the National Association of Sensor Science and Technology to facilitate greater business growth and collaboration opportunities," added Lally.

"We were very pleased with the outcome of the launch of SensorsGOV," said Cathy Walters, Show Director. "The highly qualified attendance and unanimous positive feedback from exhibitors is proof that SensorsGOV fills a real business and education need for a previously under-served sector of the sensor marketplace. We look forward to building even stronger relationships with government and military agencies to fill their information needs," she concluded.
