UOP's New AF Spent Catalyst Stripper Packing Improves FCC Unit Performance and Flexibility

DES PLAINES, Ill.--()--June 3, 2004--UOP has introduced AF(TM) packing, the latest addition to UOP's advanced AF spent catalyst stripper technology, to improve both the FCC unit yield and hydraulic performance. Spent catalyst stripper performance is receiving more attention as refiners have increased the raw oil throughput and implemented other FCC technologies that can result in compromised stripper efficiency.

AF spent catalyst stripper technology can be applied to any FCC unit or stripper style. AF packing, AF trays, and AF grids offer more options to respond to capital, mechanical and turnaround schedule constraints, with a typical payback of just a few months. The first application of AF packing is currently in design and is expected to be operational in the spring of 2005 in a major U.S. refinery.

Since 1998, various applications of the AF spent catalyst stripper technology have been processing all qualities of feedstocks with a wide range of processing objectives in more than three dozen FCC units worldwide. The technology can lower the delta coke of the operation and reduce the regenerated catalyst temperature while operating efficiently at catalyst fluxes as high as 125,000 lb/ft2-hr. The AF spent catalyst stripper technology provides the refiner with the flexibility to increase throughput or severity of the operation while increasing the yield and selectivity of the desired products, such as light olefins, gasoline or distillate.
