The show began as a summer replacement on CBS, remaining on the air for 28 years. Its overwhelming popularity and the slowly drawled catch phrase "Hee, Haw" earned this program a place in the pantheon of national culture.
For over 20 years, HEE HAW served as the premiere exposure vehicle for country artists including Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette, Charley Pride and Johnny Cash, as well as contemporary stars like Alabama, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, and others. At the same time it showcased a veritable who's who of notable celebrities including Sammy Davis Jr, Regis Philbin, John Ritter, Terry Bradshaw and Big Bird.
HEE HAW was down-home and light-hearted enough to make its way into America's hearts. Remembered for one-line zingers(1) and sketches such as "Pickin' and Grinnin'" and "Pfft You Were Gone", HEE HAW is the 20th century icon cited, parodied, and ultimately celebrated on today's comedy programs Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, Frasier, and Late Night With David Letterman.
