| Requirements Management Solution to Help Narrow the Communication Gap Between IT and Business, Enabling Greater Team Collaboration for Lower Development Costs and Faster Time-to-Market |
“Requirements management is a key discipline underlying software quality and success. However, the problems associated with translating business requirements to software capability inside of organizations are largely cultural”
Borland Software Corporation (Nasdaq:BORL) today announced the latest edition of Borland(R) CaliberRM(TM) 6.0 for requirements management. Part of the Borland Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) portfolio of solutions, CaliberRM 6.0 is designed to address growing customer demand for faster delivery of high quality software. Faced with increased industry regulation, the pressure to comply with assessment frameworks such as the Software Engineering Institute Capability Maturity Model(R) (SW-CMM(R)) and the complexities of offshoring, the latest release of CaliberRM helps software development teams to better understand and keep up with changing business needs; expressed as "requirements"; to reduce the costs of software rework.
Bringing Requirements Management to the Masses
Failed software often results from the widespread practice of capturing business requirements within unstructured, static word processing environments. Such practices are often a prohibitive cultural barrier to the successful translation of business requirements during the development of software as they fail to facilitate collaboration and change. CaliberRM 6.0 helps to break this barrier, narrowing the communication gap between business and IT by offering a much-needed (1), structured and intuitive document-style environment. The solution is designed to help users to define requirements in a way that removes ambiguities early on. Advanced formatting capabilities tackle cultural barriers further by broadening the range of expression for requirements. CaliberRM 6.0 supports inline images, embedded tables and rich text. New capabilities will extend the reach of CaliberRM to include management of design documents, scenarios, and use cases.
"Requirements management is a key discipline underlying software quality and success. However, the problems associated with translating business requirements to software capability inside of organizations are largely cultural," commented Thomas Murphy, senior program director at META Group. "People will interact and respond to information in different ways, so organizations need options for capturing and expressing requirements which can include development artifacts such as use cases and design documents in addition to traditional text. The best requirements management solutions address the human and technology adoption barriers to ensure that all stakeholders can readily collaborate."
"We're bringing requirements management to the masses and the time is absolutely right to do so," added Boz Elloy, senior vice president of software products at Borland. "Businesses want to prevent the cost and risk of misunderstood objectives and to get good at their software. CaliberRM is increasingly becoming a door opener for customer accounts and is a pivotal entry point for the Borland ALM solution. With increased globalization and distributed teams, organizations are realizing that the heart of their software problem lies at the very definition of their business needs and how these needs are understood and translated down the line into software reality."
The Borland Advantage
First launched in 1998, CaliberRM is a leading cross-platform requirements management solution designed to set the foundation for software success. The solution has been gaining recognition and adoption due to key differentiators such as low-impact introduction with ease of use and low training overhead designed to help drive a lower total cost of ownership; as well as ease of integration with existing IT investments using the COM, .NET and Java(TM) platforms and proven scalability in bridging disparate geographic and cultural boundaries. An important starting point for the integration of activities that make up a successful Application Lifecycle Management strategy, CaliberRM is integrated across the Borland ALM product line so that requirements are visible and traceable throughout application development. It is also integrated with a broad number of third party products.
CaliberRM 6.0 also provides improved support for real time integrations and customization with a new event-enabled architecture. To ease the administrative burden on large organizations, new Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) authentication capabilities have been included in CaliberRM 6.0. LDAP provides an extensible security infrastructure to manage login information for all applications in a centralized location. CaliberRM 6.0 offers tight integration with Borland(R) StarTeam(R) 6.0, also announced today(2), to enhance predictability, control and quality over the software development process. New CaliberRM 6.0 integrations include the Borland(R) Delphi(TM) development environment and an update to the Mercury Interactive testing solution, TestDirector(R) 8.0.
