Management Transition Heralds TeleSym's Next Phase; Former RealNetworks Executive Paul Bialek Takes Interim Role, as Company Launches National CEO Search

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 18, 2003--TeleSym Inc. has named Paul Bialek as interim chief executive officer, as the company prepares for the next phase of its success.

"TeleSym is poised to lead the market for software that enables voice calling from portable computers, particularly PDAs and laptops that connect to Wi-Fi wireless networks, and we are aggressively pursuing that path," Bialek explained. "This company made fantastic progress under the guidance of its founders, and we are committed to achieving the goal of being the world leader in the category."

“IP telephony is hot right now, particularly for its cost-effectiveness, while wireless networking is delivering new data flexibility to mobile workers. SymPhone bridges the two to ensure productivity improvements and responsive service in all types of organizations.”

Bialek assumes the CEO role from company co-founder Raju Gulabani, who left to pursue other business interests. A nationwide search has been launched for a permanent CEO. Concurrent with Gulabani's departure, co-founder Dr. Karl Denninghoff, chief technology officer, departed as well.

Major Support for a New Wireless Category

TeleSym was launched three years ago to bring high-quality voice communications to mobile computing devices of all types, initially in enterprise environments. Its SymPhone System software uses patent-pending technology to deliver crystal-clear voice calls from any place that a computer has broadband Internet access.

This past September, the company closed a $12.5 million second round of financing. The same month, SymPhone software was a key element of the "Universal Communicator Platform," a prototype handset with which Intel demonstrated dual-mode (GSM/802.11) wireless phone capabilities. In October, Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., began distributing SymPhone software as part of its campus-wide VoIP installation.

"TeleSym is uniquely positioned to capitalize on the convergence of the most exciting networking and telecommunication trends," according to Louis Rajczi, investment partner, Siemens Venture Capital, and a TeleSym board member. "IP telephony is hot right now, particularly for its cost-effectiveness, while wireless networking is delivering new data flexibility to mobile workers. SymPhone bridges the two to ensure productivity improvements and responsive service in all types of organizations."

Industry Accolades

The industry newsletter FierceWireless dubbed TeleSym one of "The Fiercest 15" on its ranking of the top global wireless startup companies. Earlier this year, TeleSym launched the first wireless Internet telephony software tailored and validated for Intel(R) Centrino(TM) mobile technology computers. SymPhone was named a Product of the Year by Internet Telephony magazine, and the company was named to the "Pulver 100" list of companies changing the telecom landscape.

In addition, the company has active partnerships with 3com and Intermec, with others to be announced shortly.

Bialek Brings Experience in Technical Innovations

Bialek has more than 20 years of experience in management of companies bringing technical innovations to market. He most recently served as chief financial officer of RevenueScience. Before that, he was chief financial officer and senior vice president, finance and operations, of RealNetworks. Prior to that, he was chief financial officer at Metapath Software Corp., a wireless telecommunication company. Bialek was chief financial officer of Edmark Corp., including the period when IBM acquired Edmark. He started his career at KPMG Peat Marwick.

Bialek has a degree in business administration from Seattle University and is a Certified Public Accountant. He serves on the boards of the Washington Software Association and Washington Research Foundation, and also on the advisory board for Seattle University's accounting program.
