Freedom Rings Again: FreePBX v3 Makes Friends with Developers

Modularity, PBX Engine Independence, and Standards-Based Frameworks Usher in the Future of Open Source Telephony

CHICAGO--()--Today at the ClueCon Open Source Telephony Developers Conference, the FreePBX project, sponsored by Bandwidth.com, announced the immediate availability of the Developer’s Preview of FreePBX v3. FreePBX is the most popular open source telephony management GUI, and serves as a basis for the management interfaces in AsteriskNOW and Trixbox CE (see asterisknow.org and trixbox.org for version details), as well as many other open source PBX distributions. It has been downloaded over 3 million times, and counts approximately 300,000 active phone systems.

FreePBX v3 ushers in the next generation in open source telephony by introducing a brand new architecture that makes it much easier for developers to contribute to the leading open source telephony management interface.

The design goals for FreePBX v3 included:

  • True telephony engine agnosticism, able to support FreeSwitch, Asterisk and other telephony “engines”
  • An improved modular and extensible approach that encourages the further development of features and capabilities within the platform
  • A new MVC (model-view-controller) framework
  • A best-of-breed foundation of software components to focus development efforts on the telephony capabilities and differentiators
  • Excellent documentation to encourage a quick ramp up in developer involvement
  • Customized interfaces that can support different skins

These fundamental improvements are based on 5 years of experience and feedback, as well as contributions from the TCAPI project (now merged with FreePBX) and learning from Bandwidth.com’s internal Phonebooth development project. FreePBX v3 core technologies are built on PHP, Kohana, Doctrine and jQuery.

FreePBX v3 is the culmination of the best ideas in open source software development, a strong and growing community of dedicated developers, and the commitment of a solid corporate sponsor, “ said Philippe Lindheimer, FreePBX project lead and Bandwidth.com’s Open Source Community Director. “FreePBX is on the edge of the next wave of innovation in open source telephony, and we invite developers to get involved.

Concurrent with the v3 Developer’s Preview, the FreePBX project also announced the immediate availability of FreePBX v2.6 beta – the beta of the next production-ready version of FreePBX supported by the community. Developers can download both versions of FreePBX by visiting FreePBX.org.

Additionally, in support of the release of FreePBX v3, Bandwidth.com has launched a new Developer Sandbox program to give selected developers expanded access to Bandwidth.com network features. Find out more at http://sandbox.bandwidth.com.

About FreePBX

FreePBX made its debut in 2004 as the AMP project (Asterisk Management Portal), but changed to FreePBX in anticipation of becoming an engine-agnostic management interface – a goal being realized with v3, which will initially support FreeSwitch, followed closely by Asterisk. FreePBX is now the most popular open source telephony management GUI, and is a basis for the management interface in AsteriskNOW (http://asterisknow.org/) ,Trixbox CE (http://www.trixbox.com/products/trixbox-ce/features) and several lesser know telephony distributions. It has been downloaded over 3 million times, and counts approximately 300,000 active phone systems.
