NEW YORK--()--The Board of Directors of Goldman Sachs Bank USA, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE: GS), today announced the appointments of Matthew W. Barrett, Ann F. Kaplan and Thomas C. Melzer as independent directors of Goldman Sachs Bank USA, increasing the total number of the bank's directors to ten.

Matthew W. Barrett
Mr. Barrett most recently served from 1999 to 2006 as Chief Executive Officer and then Chairman of Barclays PLC, a major global financial services provider headquartered in the United Kingdom. Prior to joining Barclays, Mr. Barrett had a distinguished career, spanning 37 years, at Bank of Montreal, a North American bank headquartered in Canada. He joined Bank of Montreal in 1962 and served as its Chairman and CEO from 1989 to 1999.
Mr. Barrett currently serves as a director of Harry Winston Diamond Corporation and as a member of the international advisory board of National Bank of Kuwait. In recognition of his business leadership and public service, Mr. Barrett was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honor. He was named Canada’s CEO of the Year in 1995.
Ann F. Kaplan
Ms. Kaplan is the chair of Circle Financial Group, an investment and wealth management membership organization and an adjunct professor of Finance at the Columbia University School of Business. Previously, Ms. Kaplan was a general partner of Goldman, Sachs & Co. and a managing director after the firm became a public company. She was a member of the firm’s Fixed Income Division for 23 years and served as the head of the firm’s municipal bond department. During her last three years at the firm, she was a member of the Asset Management Division focusing on wealth management.
Ms. Kaplan currently serves on the Board of Financial Guaranty Insurance Company, a provider of credit enhancement for infrastructure finance and structured securities. She also serves on the Boards of the American Red Cross, Columbia University, Columbia Business School Board of Overseers, Smith College and the Museum of Arts & Design. She is a member of the Committee of 200, the Economic Club of New York, the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Women’s Forum.
Thomas C. Melzer
Mr. Melzer is a co-founder and managing director of RiverVest Venture Partners, a venture capital firm headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri focusing on medical device and biopharmaceutical investments. From 1985 to 1998, Mr. Melzer was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. He also chaired the Federal Reserve System’s committee that directs the system-level activities of the 12 reserve banks in financial services provided to banks, other depository institutions and the U.S. Treasury. Prior to joining the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Mr. Melzer had a sixteen year career at Morgan Stanley & Co. Incorporated. He joined Morgan Stanley in 1968, and was named a managing director in 1977 and head of the U.S. Government Securities Department in 1980.
Mr. Melzer currently serves as a director of ISTO Technologies, Inc., a development stage orthobiologics company. He is a director of Parents as Teachers National Center, Inc., a member of the Advisory Board of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and a member of the National Council of the Olin School of Business at Washington University.
