6th Grade Basketball Stars from Broward County Are Headed to National Championship

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla.--()--The Miami Magic basketball team, comprised of sixth graders from Broward County, is headed to Indiana to compete in the USSSA National Basketball Championship in Fort Wayne, Indiana, July 5-8. The team punched its ticket for the national championship by winning its division at the Florida state championships in Lakeland, Florida, earlier this June. No strangers to success, the Magic are ranked number 1 in the nation in their division and previously brought home titles at Wellington March Madness, the 24/7 Hoops Classic, and the Slam Fest Open.

“The team has only been together since March”

The team’s players attending the championship game, Casey Baugh (Hallandale), Mark Bruno, Haanif Cheatham, Luciano Cruz-Fernandez, Dimitri Harper (all of Pembroke Pines), Avery Jackson (Miramar), James Labadi (Fort Lauderdale), Brandon Marshall (Davie), David Moya (Plantation), Lyle Rodriguez (Miami Lakes), and Shaun Wingfield (Pembroke Pines), attend practices every week at Flanagan High School. Dr. Tony Moya serves as the team’s head coach and is assisted by Roy Hinds and Mike Wingfield.

“These athletes are a true inspiration to the community and their dedication to the game is truly remarkable,” said Head Coach Dr. Tony Moya. “Their dedication and heart are unparalleled, and the support of our community has helped to foster their talent for the game and make all of this possible from a financial standpoint. Bringing home the National Title from the USSSA 2009 Championship would be a win for our team and our supporters.”

The team is being sponsored by different local groups, including the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine, Weston Outpatient Surgical Center, Millennium Anesthesia, Dr. Tony Moya, Dr. Gary Hindin, Antonio Bernardini, Dr. Robert Baylis, Howard Deckers, Team Magic Athletic Association, DPI and other businesses from the South Florida community.

“The team has only been together since March,” said Moya. “Our goal right now is to keep this team together for next year so they can refine their skills by participating in more competitions, especially nationally next season so they may possibly earn scholarships in the future. Any donations would be welcome to assist in funding their costs to compete in future competitions.”
