BERKELEY, Calif.--()--Borrego Solar Systems, Inc., a leading designer and installer of grid-connected solar electric power systems, today announced that Veritable Vegetable, the nation’s oldest distributor of certified organic produce, has installed a 560-panel solar electric system on its 25,000 square foot warehouse facility in San Francisco. The 106 kW system will save Veritable Vegetable approximately $60,000 annually, paying for itself within five years and providing free electricity for approximately 25 years thereafter.
“This is a great example of businesses realizing that solar is not only an environmentally responsible move, but can also provide a boost to the bottom line. We look forward to continuing our work with businesses like Veritable Vegetable that have the vision and commitment to take this important step.”
“Borrego is proud to have a community leader like Veritable Vegetable as a customer in the fast growing renewable energy industry,” said Mike Hall, president of Borrego Solar Systems, Inc. “This is a great example of businesses realizing that solar is not only an environmentally responsible move, but can also provide a boost to the bottom line. Veritable Vegetable is a women-owned organic produce distributor based in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1974 with a strong commitment to sustainable agriculture, Veritable Vegetable has worked to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability at every level of the company since its inception. In addition to installing a solar power system, Veritable Vegetable has instituted several other company-wide initiatives to stay true to its philosophy, including: installing efficient cooling systems in their newest 6,000 square foot cooler, exploring alternative fuels for their fleet of 28 trucks, requiring a “no-idling” policy for their truckers, and working with shippers and receivers to plan the most efficient routes so that trucks are full in both directions. Additionally, the company created a “Green Team” of staff tasked with finding new ways the company can save energy and cut costs. As a result, the company has significantly reduced its trash and recycling pickups, started composting and created a more efficient way of disposing of all the plastic it uses.
“Installing this solar system from Borrego was another demonstration of our commitment to sustainability. At Veritable Vegetable, we believe that we must always be poised to implement new and innovative systems as they become available,” said Mary Jane Evans, CEO of Veritable Vegetable. “We believe in realizing change, not just talking about it.”
