RCN Supports Upcoming NYC Triathlon, Providing Free Phone Access to Participating Athletes
Sponsors High-Speed Transition Zone
HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--RCN Corporation (NASDAQ: RCNI), a leading provider of digital television, data, and voice services to residential and small – medium business customers, announced that it will be the official sponsor of the High-Speed Transition Zone at the 8th annual Nautica New York City Triathlon, providing free phone service to Triathlon athletes.
This year’s 31 mile NYC Triathlon is scheduled to take place on July 20, consisting of a 1500 meter swim in the Hudson River, a challenging 40 kilometer bike ride, and a 10 kilometer run across 72nd street that finishes with a loop around Central Park. 3,000 participants, broken into professional and non-professional groups, are expected to finish the race between 7:45am and 1:00pm and will be met at the finish line with awards, entertainment, and food.
RCN is the official Transition sponsor. The RCN High-Speed Transition is located at 79th St and Riverside Park and is made up of two large grass fields - Transition Yellow and Transition Red. Here racers will switch from swimming to biking, trading their goggles for their bike, and proceed to the Westside Highway. After completing their bike ride, participants will move to the final leg of the race, a 10 kilometer run finishing in Central Park.
“The New York City Triathlon has rapidly become the most popular Triathlon in America selling out in less than 8 hours with 3,000 amateurs and the world’s top Olympians,” said John Korff, Organizer of the New York City Triathlon. “The real flurry of action takes place at the RCN Transitions – it’s like Grand Central with everyone running for the 5:50 to Greenwich on a holiday weekend.”
The Triathlon’s Finish Festival will include the RCN Connection Booth, interactive sponsor displays, food vendors, music & entertainment; massage therapy, award presentations and much more in Central Park. RCN will provide free phone service at the RCN Connection Booth, next to the Athlete Recovery Zone, for triathlon participants to make phone calls to friends and family.
“We are thrilled to be a sponsor of the Nautica New York City Triathlon because it promotes a healthy lifestyle and healthy competition,” said RCN Vice President & General Manager-New York Tony Ontiveros. “As a Triple Play digital television, data, and voice services contender, we are a supporter of competition. So, we are proud to sponsor this event and others like it.”
The company is also sponsoring the RCN High-Speed Transition Tips video, which provides hints on how to improve a racer’s time, as well as the RCN High Speed Course tour, a video that gives first time racers a road map of what to expect on race day.
