Lloyd H. Dean Installed as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Catholic Health Association of the United States
CHW President/CEO to Guide and Advance the Efforts of the Catholic Health Ministry
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), the nation’s eighth largest hospital system, today announced the installation of President/CEO Lloyd H. Dean as the new chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA). Mr. Dean was installed as chairperson during the 2008 Catholic Health Assembly held here June 22-24.
As chairperson, Mr. Dean will serve as a key liaison to elected officials, policy makers and healthcare experts in focusing on the growing problem of the nation’s uninsured and the need for improved access to quality, affordable healthcare in the country.
“We’re pleased to welcome Lloyd to his new role as chairperson,” said Sr. Carol Keehan, DC, CHA president and chief executive officer. “His years of leadership experience and commitment to the Catholic health ministry, both in California and nationally, contribute greatly to advancing the work of the association and its members, including our goal of expanding access to quality healthcare for everyone.”
With more than 25 years experience in healthcare, Mr. Dean is widely recognized as a leader who is deeply passionate about advocating for those without a voice and for his leadership on such issues as healthcare reform at the local, state, and national levels.
“I have seen firsthand Lloyd’s tremendous work in California as the leader of Catholic Healthcare West. Lloyd and CHW have also been great partners in our efforts to enact comprehensive healthcare reform in California, which is why I know he’ll do an outstanding job pushing the ball forward on healthcare issues at the national level, too,” Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said.
In 2004, Gov. Schwarzenegger appointed Mr. Dean to the California Commission for Jobs and Economic Growth. Mr. Dean also chairs the Bay Area Council’s Healthcare Committee and is a co-architect of Healthy San Francisco, which is designed to provide healthcare to San Francisco’s 82,000 uninsured residents.
“I’m proud to be able to serve CHA and help advocate for the 47 million people in our country without insurance who should have access to quality, compassionate healthcare,” Mr. Dean says. “As our country heads into our next Presidential election, I’m pleased to have the opportunity to further serve those who are disenfranchised by raising the important issue of healthcare reform nationally.”
In his role as CHW’s President/CEO, Mr. Dean is responsible for $10.5 billion in assets and the overall management, strategy, and direction of CHW’s integrated healthcare system of 41 hospitals, 45 health clinics, nine trauma centers, five medical practice groups, 50,000 employees and 9,700 physicians.
In May, Mr. Dean was recognized as one of the nation’s top 25 minority healthcare executives by Modern Healthcare magazine. In February, Mr. Dean led the CHW Healthcare Leadership Summit, a think-tank discussion with 24 national leaders from a broad cross section of industries, on the question of how to ensure compassion remains a fundamental element of any national health reform policy discussion.
Previously, Mr. Dean was executive vice president and chief operating officer of Advocate Health Care, a faith-based integrated health care delivery system in Oak Brook, Ill. Mr. Dean also was with The Upjohn Co., where he held progressively responsible management positions, including national vice president of sales for the Upjohn Health Care Services Division. He joined CHW as President/CEO in 2000.
