Annual Rankings of Top Media Available From BurrellesLuce; Popular Lists Chart Data for Daily Newspapers, Consumer Magazines, and Blogs
LIVINGSTON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--USA Today, AARP The Magazine, and Huffington Post are the leading daily newspaper, consumer magazine and blog in the United States, according to rankings collected by BurrellesLuce.
The most recent data are available in the 2008 edition of “Top Daily Newspapers, Blogs, and Consumer Magazines,” produced by BurrellesLuce and offered free to PR practitioners. The lists show the top 100 dailies, largest 25 consumer magazines, and most popular 25 blogs.
The rankings reflect print-media figures reported by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC), while the blog standings are based on Technorati Authority scores.
Newspaper rankings cover the six-month period ending March 31, 2008, and the magazine rankings are based on figures for the six months ending Dec. 31, 2007. The BurrellesLuce list of the leading blogs is a daily snapshot as of April 28, 2008.
“The BurrellesLuce lists of media rankings are authoritative, quick-reference resources that PR practitioners can use in their campaign planning,” said Valerie Merahn Simon, the company’s senior vice president of sales. “We provide the lists in keeping with the main goal of our planning, monitoring, and measurement services, which is to help communications professionals improve their media relations results.”
While USA Today maintained the supremacy it enjoyed at the end of March 2007 and AARP The Magazine held the top position it claimed at the end of December 2006, Huffington Post climbed to first place from the fifth spot it occupied on May 2, 2007.
These were the other top 10 daily newspapers, in order of ranking: Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Daily News, (New York), New York Post, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Houston Chronicle, and Arizona Republic.
The 2007 end-of-year rankings of consumer magazines were nearly identical to those posted in December 2006. The biggest change involved Time, which dropped from Number 8 to Number 12. AAA Westways, meanwhile, moved up two slots to tenth.
The second- through ninth-place finishers among consumer magazines were AARP Bulletin, Reader’s Digest, Better Homes and Gardens, National Geographic, Good Housekeeping, Family Circle, Woman’s Day, and Ladies’ Home Journal.
Based on their Technorati Authority score, the top five blogs were unchanged from 12 months ago but there was movement within the group. (Technorati Authority is defined as the number of blogs linking to a website in the past six months. The higher the number, the greater the Technorati Authority.)
Besides Huffington Post, which rose from fifth to first, TechCrunch went from fourth to second, Engadget dropped from first to third, Gizmodo slipped from third to fourth, and Boing Boing fell from second to fifth.
The leading 25 blogs included 11 that were not on the list a year ago. Two of the newcomers made it into the top 10: I Can Has Cheezburger? (8), and Mashable! The Social Network Blog (9).
