Games including Q*Bert, Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Galaxian, Dig Dug, Joust, and Zookeeper may finally meet their match when "The Toughest Gun in Dodge City" tournament is held April 6-9 at Apollo Amusements, 820 Andrews Street, Pompano Beach, Florida 33069.
For the first time in 21 years, the "2007 Guinness World Records Book"(TM) will include video game high scores. Any records will be submitted to Guinness World Records by Walter Day of Twin Galaxies, the worldwide authority on video game scores, just in time for their publication deadline.
Here are the biggest match-ups and record attempts:
-- Q*Bert will be pushed by Kelly Tharp, of Sellersburg, Ind., and Doris Self of Plantation, Fla. Self is trying to reclaim the Q*Bert record she held in the early '80s. Now 80, she has been working on her technique in between Texas Hold 'Em tournaments, Bridge League, and Craps games.
-- Steve Wiebe of Redmond, Wash., will attempt to reclaim the Donkey Kong record, currently held by the Video Game Player of the Century: Billy Mitchell. Mitchell, from Hollywood, Fla., became history's first player to record a perfect score on Pac-Man in 1999. No one has ever broken 1 million points on Donkey Kong at a public venue, and most believe history will be made at this event.
-- Abdner Ashman of Queens, N.Y., will attempt to raise his stratospheric World Record on Ms. Pac-Man.
-- A U.S. vs. U.K. showdown will pit Galaxian's current World Record holder, Gary Whelan, from Dukinfield, England, against former champion Perry Rodgers of Redmond, Wash. Whelan will be making his first trip to America for this long anticipated match-up.
Who will be recognized as the best in the world? The gamers whose three initials are atop the high score page at the conclusion of "The Toughest Gun in Dodge City" tournament.
