Turner & Townsend Recognized for Work on Award-Winning Sisters of St. Joseph Residence
Project Named Toronto Construction Association’s 2013 “Best of the Best”
TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Turner & Townsend, a global construction and project management consultancy, was honored for its work on the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto Residence, which won the Toronto Construction Association’s (TCA) 2013 “Best of the Best” Award for medium projects. The annual “Best of the Best” awards recognize projects that demonstrate unique teamwork, dedication, professionalism and leadership.
“It’s a great honor to be a part of the team recognized with this award”
As part of a multi-disciplinary team, Turner & Townsend provided cost and schedule management and consultancy services for the five-floor Sisters of St. Joseph Residence located above the ravine along the Don Valley in Toronto. The iconic building is approximately 96,000 sq. ft and provides the Sisters of St. Joseph with 23 assisted living units and 35 private hospital units with rehabilitation, convalescent, and palliative care. Construction of the project began in November 2010 and was completed in March 2013.
Turner & Townsend made a significant difference in the Sisters of St. Joseph project by recognizing the client’s unique Mission Statement and applying that to the construction process. Using its proactive approach to cost management, Turner & Townsend was able to establish an accurate, reasonable and comprehensive budget at the start of the project, then constantly challenge the team and support the Sisters throughout the entire project when faced with the many decisions that occur.
“It’s a great honor to be a part of the team recognized with this award,” said Turner & Townsend Director Mark Jones. “This project was unique in that it was critical that we deliver not only an exceptional home for the Sisters, but one that aligned with the Sisters’ mission of outreach to the community. We were keenly aware that every dollar spent on construction was a dollar that couldn’t be spent on supporting the Sisters’ mission, and we worked hard to manage the budget accordingly.”
Sustainability was also an important facet of the project. The facility was built to the equivalent of LEED Platinum standards and is equipped with ground source heating/cooling, solar, rainwater cistern, advanced building envelope/insulation, building shading, natural drought resistant landscaping, green roofing, and operable windows. The project also included restoration of the historic Taylor House and extensive high quality landscaping.
“We’re proud to have worked with our partners to deliver a beautiful, environmentally friendly building that will be a part of the fabric of the Toronto area for decades to come,” said Jones.
The Sisters of St. Joseph building is the latest addition to the list of projects in which Turner & Townsend has been part of a TCA winning project team. Previous winning projects include Art Gallery of Ontario & William Osler Health Centre.
