WARSTEIN-BELECKE, Germany--()--AEG Power Solutions (FWB:3W9), a global provider of power electronics systems and solutions for industrial power supplies and renewable energy solutions, today announced several orders for its storage converter Protect.SC for use in large battery energy storage systems.

The growing generation and integration of renewable energy sources create new challenges for the public grid, especially regarding grid stabilization and grid levelling. In typical ON- and OFF-grid environments, innovative battery storage systems in the megawatt range are being used to cope with these challenges.

AEG PS is supplying its Protect.SC storage converter to Vanadis Power for one of the biggest battery energy storage systems in Northern Germany. The storage converter has rated power of 500 kVA and is used for storing the locally generated wind power.
Vanadis Power supplied the Vanadium-Redox-Flow batteries in this project. The batteries have a capacity of more than a megawatt hour, and can theoretically provide energy for about 100 single-family homes for a whole day.
AEG PS‘s storage converter Protect SC.500 will be delivered shortly, and the whole unit should be completed this summer.

In another of the European projects, the AEG PS Storage converter is being used for peak load shaving. In this case, AEG PS have supplied several products from part of its advanced systems range which are combined to provide the complete solution to the customer: a local management unit SC.LMU and the recently launched battery management system MoniStore. The management unit provides the discharging function within a given time frame when the load demand in the substation is exceeding a certain threshold.

The system is also managing the battery loading when the load demand is lower, for example from 6 PM to 6 AM or on weekends. Due to the longer battery loading time on weekends, a complete battery loading can be achieved.

The wireless battery management system MoniStore is continuously monitoring the proper functioning of single battery cells by measuring cell voltage and temperature inside the battery.

Further orders have been booked with prestigious partners in Europe and in the USA. These systems will also be used in megawatt battery storage systems – partly with Redox-Flow and partly with lead-acid batteries.
AEG Power Solutions “Grid Friendly ®” label characterizes all the products which contribute to grid-stabilization or to smooth integration of alternative energy sources to the grid.
