NEW YORK--()--Project Phoenix—a non-profit organization established as a commitment made by Morad Fareed of Delos and Boby Duval of L’Athletique D’Haiti (LADH) at the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative—publicly revealed plans for Phoenix Stadium, a 12,000 seat professional soccer stadium in Cite Soleil, Haiti on Dec. 6 2012 at architect Carlos Zapata’s studio in Manhattan, New York. The event was attended by soccer star Mia Hamm, model and activist Petra Nemcova, and philanthropist and entrepreneur Rohan Marley.

Phoenix Stadium is a world-class soccer facility and self-sustaining community for the people of Cite Soleil, Haiti – a United Nations Red Zone that NGOs and United Nations staff are advised to avoid at all costs due to serious security concerns. The stadium will also house LADH—a youth development program that provides underprivileged participants with a safe, clean, supportive environment where they can learn the discipline of sports and the structure of teamwork—and offer a soccer academy, an elementary and middle school and dormitories. Phoenix Stadium will be landscaped with edible gardens, a small lake containing tilapia and a composting and recycling plant.

Details and renderings of the project can be viewed at www.project-phoenix.org. The newly launched website also showcases a video outlining the project’s mission, offers background on the project’s champions, and tells visitors how to volunteer their time and contribute funding to this bold philanthropic project, which has an estimated cost of $5 million. Sports apparel brand 4POINT4 has already signed on as a sponsor to the project.

“Project Phoenix is the next generation of philanthropy,” says Morad Fareed, co-founder/managing partner of Delos, the Wellness Real Estate™ Company. “We are devoted to tangible on-the-ground results for the people of Cite Soleil, Haiti and the Project Phoenix website gives the public a chance to participate in the realization of that mission.”

Fareed has assembled a world-class group of experts to work pro bono to bring this dream project to reality, including:

  • World-renowned architect Carlos Zapata – whose projects include Soldier Field Stadium in Chicago and the Bitexco Financial Tower in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
  • Engineer William Faschan of LERA
  • Stadium designer Gordon E. Wood
  • Landscape architect Charles Anderson of Charles Anderson Atelier

Currently the site of the stadium is being prepared by laying down actual rubble from the 2010 earthquake, with groundbreaking set for 2013.

A 3-D model of Phoenix Stadium can be viewed at media appointments. Contact Allison Dent (646.654.3407) for more information, interviews, photos of the launch event, or to arrange an appointment.
