It's the size of a grain of rice, but in an emergency this capsule could be the only link between emergency room staff and a patient's vital health care information. Introduced this week in Greater Palm Beach, Health Link from VeriChip Corporation of Delray Beach, allows emergency room staff to treat a patient more rapidly, accurately and safely by providing immediate access to the patient's vital data during a health crisis. Health Link requires implanting program participants with a tiny microchip that cannot be lost or stolen. The microchip contains a 16-digit identification number that, when scanned by a Health Link reader, provides a secure connection to a private, online database revealing the patient's personal health record and emergency contact information. Sixteen Regional Hospitals already participate in the program. Those interested in becoming a Health Link member can easily enroll at one of eight conveniently located HEARx centers in Greater Palm Beach. (Photo: Business Wire)
